Landa Park and Central West New Braunfels: A Resident's Guide
Landa Park is a 51-acre City of New Braunfels park at the Comal Springs headwaters. This guide covers what the park offers, the rules that apply there, the history and protected species of the springs, and the official City and county lookups to run before buying a home nearby.

The short version. Landa Park is a public City park at 164 Landa Park Dr., New Braunfels, TX 78130. The City describes it as "51 acres of amenities under the shade of giant oak trees," with trails, playgrounds, a miniature train, an arboretum, an aquatic complex, the Wurstfest grounds and Comal Springs. None of the City pages, plans or maps reviewed for this guide defines a Central West boundary. Here, the phrase refers to the area around Landa Park and the Comal Springs headwaters. Living near the park does not settle a property's city-limits status, zoning, historic status, flood conditions, utilities or school assignment, so each of those is checked by address.
This page is a companion to our Landa Park and central-west New Braunfels neighborhood guide. Here we focus on the park itself and the official records behind a purchase nearby. Sources were read on October 29, 2026. We do not publish market figures for this area; for current data on a specific home, ask a local agent.
Where is Central West New Braunfels?
None of the City pages, plans or maps reviewed for this guide defines a Central West boundary. Here, the phrase refers to the area around Landa Park and the Comal Springs headwaters. We do not list streets or subdivisions as belonging to it. The places we can locate from official sources are these:
- Landa Park, 164 Landa Park Dr. (City of New Braunfels).
- Comal Springs, which the National Register record places at Landa Park, 164 Landa Park Drive (Texas Historical Commission Atlas).
- Panther Canyon Nature Trail, which runs from Landa Park Drive to Ohio Avenue, with its main trailhead off Landa Park Drive at 15 Gazebo Circle (City facility page).
- City Hall, 550 Landa St. (City contact block).
One check comes before everything else. The City's New to NB page says mailing addresses are assigned "based on which post office delivers your mail, not whether you live in the city limits," and that the New Braunfels Utilities (NBU) service area "is different than the city limits." The City points residents to its General Reference Map to confirm.
Landa Park at a glance
The park is open daily from 6am to 10pm. The parks administrative office is at 110 Golf Course Rd., open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. For reservations, call 830-221-4350 or email parks@newbraunfels.gov. The City calls Landa Park "a New Braunfels icon" on its Parks page. What the City lists there and on the Landa Park page:
- Comal Springs headwaters. The City calls Comal Springs "the largest springs in Texas" and "ecologically important."
- Trails and play. Walking and hiking trails, three playgrounds, playscapes, the Dance Slab amphitheater and a miniature train.
- Paddle boats and miniature golf. Paddle boats on Landa Lake and the miniature golf course are operated by PaddleTX, according to the City.
- Golf. The City describes Landa Park Golf Course as an "18-hole public golf course covering 122 acres along the Comal River in Landa Park." The course site lists 180 Golf Course Rd. The City gives the course and the park separate acreages; we report each as stated and do not combine them.
- Rentals. Landa Haus is a climate-controlled event facility for up to 150 people. Pavilions, picnic spots and sand volleyball courts can also be reserved.
- Arboretum. The William and Dolores Schumann Arboretum is part of Landa Park. It was designated an arboretum in 1982 and named for the Schumanns in 2007, and it has a gazebo, pedestrian bridges, a nature trail and restrooms (City facility page).
Landa Park Aquatic Complex
The aquatic complex is at 350 Aquatic Circle. According to the City's aquatics page, the spring-fed pool "is fed by the Comal Springs and stays a constant 72 degrees year round," with depths from 0 to 9 feet. The Coach E.E. "Bud" Dallmann Olympic Pool is 25 yards by 50 meters with lap lanes, and there is a zero-depth pool for young children. The 2026 season ended with weekend-only hours through Labor Day, September 7. We have not documented the 2027 pool season or admission prices; confirm them with the City before you go.
Panther Canyon Nature Trail
Panther Canyon covers 49 acres. It begins in Landa Park near the Comal Springs headwaters and climbs the Balcones Escarpment. The City says to allow at least 1.5 hours for all 1.8 miles of trails: the Canyon Trail, Small Loop, Rim Trail and North Rim Trail. The City describes the North Rim Trail as rugged and difficult.
Park rules worth knowing
From the City's Park Rules and Policies:
- Glass containers, personal portable grills and camping are prohibited in all City parks.
- Pets must be on a leash up to 6 feet long, and pets are not allowed in any waterway in Landa Park.
- Wading and swimming are allowed only in designated areas. The rules page does not name those areas, so ask the City or follow posted signs.
- Landa Park is an exception to the general park alcohol ban, but alcohol is prohibited in designated parking areas and within 25 feet of a roadway.
- Parking is allowed in designated areas only.
Feeding wildlife is prohibited citywide, "including public parks, private property, and green spaces," under Sections 82-24 to 82-28, in effect since 2018. The City's Wildlife Feeding Prohibition page refers to deer at Panther Canyon and to feeding along Landa Lake. The Park Rules page says violators face a citation and fines up to $500 per violation. The rule applies inside city limits.
A park permit is needed for large grills, amplified music, inflatables or other special items. The City's pages we read do not address tubing in Landa Lake or drones, so ask before you plan either.
Comal Springs: history and protected species
National Register listing. "Comal Springs (Site of Major Spring)" at Landa Park was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on May 30, 2019, reference 100003970 (THC Atlas). The listing covers the spring site, not Landa Park as a whole. An article reprinted by the Edwards Aquifer Authority on September 22, 2019 describes the nominated area as the major spring west of Landa Park Drive and ties it to El Camino Real de los Tejas.
How the land became a park. A 2009 Texas Historical Commission marker titled "Landa Park" (THC Atlas marker 16021) says Joseph Landa bought the land in 1859, Harry Landa opened it as a park in 1898, voters approved City purchase in 1936, and WPA crews built facilities in the 1930s. The marker also says Wurstfest has been held in the park each November since the early 1960s. We did not verify 2026 Wurstfest dates, closures or parking plans; check the event and the City for those.
Endangered species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists two species tied to these springs:
- The Comal Springs riffle beetle is federally endangered, listed in 1997, and lives in and around spring openings in the San Marcos and Comal spring complexes.
- The fountain darter was listed as endangered on October 13, 1970. After restocking in 1975 and 1976, USFWS says, "Fountain darters now occupy Comal Springs and the Comal River from Landa Lake downstream" to the Guadalupe River.
The Comal River
The City's Comal River page says the river "is always open for recreation, and is only closed during times of high water or for public safety," with temporary closure at flows of 600 cubic feet per second (cfs) and above. River access parks are open 6am to midnight. Prince Solms Park, at 100 Liebscher, is one of the City's river locations. The City Tube Chute has lifeguards on weekends in May and daily from June to mid-August, and none after Labor Day. The City also notes: "River parking is PAID parking!" That page does not describe river access from Landa Park or resident parking permits, so we give no permit or fee details.
Checking a home near Landa Park
Being close to the park tells you little about a specific property. These are the City, county and district records to check for the exact address.
Flood
The City's Floodplain Management page says its "entire community is susceptible to flooding, not just those structures located within Special Flood Hazard Areas." The City offers site visits for flooding, drainage and sewer concerns, site-specific flood data including floodway information and past flooding records, and Elevation Certificates on file for properties in a Special Flood Hazard Area. It also warns that its newest maps may not yet appear in FEMA's system. Contacts: Building (830) 221-4041 or (830) 221-4060; Public Works drainage (830) 221-4020; Planning GIS (830) 221-4050. For the federal map, search the address in FEMA's Flood Map Service Center.
For this address, ask the City's Building Department for floodway information and past flooding records, and check FEMA's Flood Map Service Center. The City flood page does not discuss the Comal River or Dry Comal Creek, and we found no flood history for this area, so we make no flood statement about any home here. Ask the City for the records on the property you are considering.
Zoning, historic districts and short-term rentals
The City links an Interactive Zoning Map for property inside city limits, along with the zoning ordinance (Chapter 144) on Municode.
The City lists four local historic districts on its Historic Districts page: Sophienburg Hill, Mill Street, Downtown and Stock. The City does not describe any of them as including Landa Park. Confirm historic-district status for an exact address rather than assuming it from location.
The City's Short Term Rentals page defines a short-term rental (STR) as a one- or two-family dwelling rented for overnight lodging for less than 30 days, and states that:
- STRs are not allowed in any residential zoning district;
- a special use permit is required in nonresidential districts, except C-4, C-4A and C-4B;
- STRs are not allowed in the floodway (a separate rule from the floodplain); and
- permits and annual life-safety inspections are required within city limits.
The page shows no effective date. We make no rental income or eligibility claim for any property.
Utilities, appraisal and schools
NBU is a community-owned utility providing electric, water and wastewater service to New Braunfels and the surrounding area (About NBU). Use its service area map, then confirm each service for the address; being inside a service territory does not guarantee a connection.
The Comal Appraisal District Property Search lets you search by owner, address or ID. Its notice reads "Information provided for research purposes only," so confirm the account matches the property you are buying. We publish no tax rates or values.
No official district or City source we read assigns a school district or campus to Landa Park or the area around it. New Braunfels ISD adopted new elementary attendance zones for 2025-2026 (announced March 10, 2025) and links an Attendance Zones lookup. Comal ISD links its attendance zones from its School Information page. The Texas Education Agency says its School District Locator "should not be used to attempt determination of a school attendance zones or legal boundaries" (TEA). Confirm the district and campus with the district, using the full address and school year.
Where to look up a property near Landa Park
| Question | Where to check | What it does not settle |
|---|---|---|
| Inside city limits? | City General Reference Map, using the exact address. | A New Braunfels mailing address is not proof. |
| Zoning | City Interactive Zoning Map and Chapter 144. | Covers property inside city limits only. |
| Historic district? | City Historic Districts page; ask the City for the address. | Nearness to the park or the springs listing says nothing about a home. |
| Flood | FEMA Flood Map Service Center, then the City Building Department for floodway data and past flooding records. | The City warns its newest maps may not yet be in FEMA's system. |
| Short-term rental | City Short Term Rentals page and the parcel's zoning. | A rental nearby does not show this property qualifies. |
| Utilities | NBU service area map, then NBU for each service. | Service territory is not a connection guarantee. |
| Appraisal account | Comal Appraisal District Property Search. | Research use only; confirm the account and year. |
| Schools | NBISD Attendance Zones or Comal ISD attendance zones, then the district. | TEA's locator is not an attendance-zone answer. |
Questions to bring to a showing
These come from the official sources above. They are our suggestions, not quotes from buyers:
- Is the property inside New Braunfels city limits on the General Reference Map?
- What is its zoning, and is it in any local historic district?
- What do FEMA's map and the City's floodway and past-flooding records show for this address?
- If a short-term rental is in the plan, does the zoning allow it, and is the property outside the floodway?
- Which NBU services are connected now?
- Which appraisal account, school district and campus apply for this year?
What we could not document
As of October 29, 2026, these were not documented in our sources. Each one is a question for the specific property or for the City, not a sign that something is absent:
- An official boundary, street list or subdivision list for "Central West New Braunfels."
- Which school district or campus serves any address near Landa Park.
- Comal River or Dry Comal Creek flood history, or the effective FEMA map panels for this area.
- Golf course operator, green fees and tee times; aquatic admission prices and the 2027 pool season.
- The arboretum's species count (two City pages give different figures) and how the park, golf course and Panther Canyon acreages relate.
- 2026 Wurstfest dates, traffic, closures and parking plans.
- The designated swim areas in Landa Lake, tubing rules inside the park and drone rules.
- Comal Springs critical habitat and flow details.
- Any market figures for homes in this area.
